"Poor Folk" is the first published story by Fyodor Dostoevsky, released in 1846. The work tells about the lives of poor people in St. Petersburg and their suffering.
 
Summary:
 
The plot is conducted through correspondence between the two main characters - Makar Devushkin, a poor civil servant, and Varvara Dobroselova, a young woman who is also in need. Makar lives in a small room and works in a low-paid job. He sincerely cares for Varya, who suffers from poverty and loneliness.
 
During the correspondence, the characters share their thoughts, experiences and hopes. Makar, despite his poverty, tries to support Varya, helps her financially and morally. He expresses his feelings for her, but also realizes that their social status puts obstacles in the way of their relationship.
 
As the plot develops, it becomes clear that Varya is facing difficulties: herlife is full of suffering and humiliation. She tries to find a job and improve her situation, but circumstances contradict her hopes. Makar remains devoted to her, although he understands that his love cannot change their fate.
 
The story ends tragically: Varya finds herself in even more difficult conditions, and Makar, worrying about her, loses hope for a better future.
 
Poor Folk reflects the themes of poverty, loneliness, and human kindness against the backdrop of a harsh reality. This work became an important milestone in Dostoevsky's work and laid the foundation for his further ideas about man and society.
