Natural Gas - 10 Interesting Facts

Natural gas is one of the most important energy sources in the world. It is cleaner than other fossil fuels and has many unique characteristics. Here are 10 interesting facts about natural gas:
- 1. Formation millions of years ago
Natural gas, like oil , formed from the remains of ancient plants and animals that lived millions of years ago. These organisms were buried under layers of sedimentary rock and subjected to high pressure and temperature, which led to their transformation into fossil fuels.
- 2. The main component is methane
The main component of natural gas is methane (CH4), the simplest hydrocarbon. It makes up 70% to 90% of the volume of natural gas; the remainder is made up of other gases such as ethane, propane, butane, and pentane.
- 3. Colorless and odorless
In its pure form, natural gas is colorless and odorless. To ensure safety and detect leaks, odorants (usually mercaptans) are added to it, giving it a characteristic, pungent rotten-egg smell.
- 4. Green fossil fuels
When burned, natural gas emits significantly less carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and sulfur than coal and oil, making it a cleaner fossil fuel. It is considered a "bridge" fuel to renewable energy sources.
- 5. Wide application
Natural gas is used for heating homes, cooking, generating electricity, as a motor fuel (compressed natural gas - CNG, liquefied natural gas - LNG) and in the chemical industry for the production of fertilizers, plastics and other products.
- 6. Stored underground or in liquefied form
Natural gas is stored in underground storage facilities (depleted gas fields, aquifers) or in liquefied form (LNG), when it is cooled to -162°C, reducing its volume by 600 times for ease of transportation by sea.
- 7. Uneven distribution of world reserves
Global natural gas reserves are unevenly distributed. The largest proven reserves are located in Russia, Iran, and Qatar, which together control more than half of the world's reserves.
- 8. Shale gas production
Advances in horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing (fracking) technologies have made it possible to extract so-called shale gas, trapped in tight shale formations. This has significantly increased accessible natural gas reserves, particularly in the United States .
- 9. Impact on the greenhouse effect
Although methane burns cleaner, it is a potent greenhouse gas, significantly more effective at trapping heat than CO2 in the short term. Even small methane leaks into the atmosphere can have a significant impact on climate.
- 10. Second place in the world energy balance
Natural gas ranks second in the global energy mix after oil , providing about a quarter of all energy consumed. Its role continues to grow due to its relative cleanliness and availability.
